Support Staff in The National Education Union
The ATL had a long standing agreement with the support staff unions on the recruitment of support staff. This agreement has now been revised for the NEU. In order to fully comply with the agreement, when a support staff worker enquires about joining the National Education Union, they should first be asked what type of establishment they work in.
If they work in an independent school or in FE, they can be encouraged to join immediately.
If they work in publicly funded school, an LA school, an academy, free school, trust, VA school etc, they are eligible to join the National Education Union, but, whilst we can represent them in individual issues, we are not able to negotiate with the employer over pay, conditions and pensions. They must be informed that unions which negotiate pay, conditions and pension for support staff are GMB, UNISON and UNITE.
Any existing ATL members or new support staff members of the NEU should contact the NEU advice line in the first instance rather than the local NUT office. Existing NUT members and new NEU teacher members can contact the advice line or the local office.
