Refugee Week, 19th - 25th June 2006 - Raising awareness and understandin

5th June 2006

Question: How many refugees are there in today's world?

1. 3 million
2. 9.7 million
3. 25 million
4. 60 million

Answer: Keep reading to find out...

The aim of Refugee Week is to raise young people's awareness and understanding of the experience of being a refugee. Like many vulnerable groups, asylum seekers and refugees have faced media hostility, and young people often find it difficult to distinguish fact from myth. An excellent free resource, suitable for both primary and secondary schools, is available from the Refugee Week website.

'Global Communities' brings together lively activities and up to date factual information to help teach this often controversial and sensitive issue. If your school is interested in taking part in an event to celebrate Refugee Week, details and help can be found at the above website. Check out the events happening in Leicester, which include: live music from Long Journey Home, cultural dress fashion shows, African drumming, recitals, Asian dance, world music and much more.

Hope to see you all at some of these events...

PS: the answer to the above question and many more statistical brainteasers can be found at www.refugeeweek.org.uk.

(9.7 million if you don't have time to check!)

Sera Shortland, Equal Opportunities Officer
