The Future of City of Leicester Teachers' Association

10th November 2017

City of Leicester Teachers' Association was formed in 1869 and pre-dates the National Union of Teachers by a year, when a number of local teacher associations combined to form the National Union of Elementary Teachers following the 1870 education act. The name National Union of Teachers was adopted in 1889.

On 1st September 2017, The National Union of Teachers became a section of the National Education Union. From January 2019, the NUT will cease to exist.

At the general meeting of the Leicester NUT Section of the NEU, to be held on 29th November, it is proposed that part of that meeting is designated a 'special' meeting to alter the Leicester Teachers' Association rules to reflect that change and to ensure that The City of Leicester Teachers' Association can continue in its own right.

It is proposed that the existing rules will be altered to form two new sets of rules to reflect this change. One set of rules will apply to The Leicester NUT Section of the NEU and the other will apply to the City of Leicester Teachers' Association. Details of the proposed new rules have been sent out via school NUT reps and will be available on our website.
