Deputy General Secretary Election
You will shortly receive your ballot paper for the election of the NUT's Deputy General Secretary, a very important position in itself and one that often leads its holder on to the job of General Secretary.
Understandably, many members decide not to vote in Union elections because they have no personal knowledge of any of the candidates, but your choice is absolutely vital for the future of the NUT and what it can do to protect teachers and education.
There are very difficult times ahead, and we need a strong well-run Union to deal with the challenges that we know will come to our pensions, our pay, our working conditions, and our ability to deliver education in the way that we as professionals think is in the best interests of children.
We do know the candidates in this election, through our roles in the Union.
As a result, we have decided to support Hazel Danson in the election.
Hazel has spent the last twenty years as a primary classroom teacher (several years of that in Leicester.) From her own experience, she knows how overworked teachers are, and what OFSTED, SATs, league tables, excessive observation and interference do to teachers.
Throughout that time she has combined her work as a teacher with work on behalf of our colleagues as an NUT elected representative at local and then at national level. She has been a member of the Union's National Executive for twelve years and is currently Chair of its Education Committee.
Hazel has a wealth of experience in leading campaigns to protect members, making our case to politicians and the public, and overseeing important aspects of the Union's work. She is also young enough to bring a new generation into the leadership of the Union.
We need someone leading the Union who can think strategically, work hard and inspire confidence that our Union can win on the major issues that affect teachers and education.
We know that Hazel can do all of these things.
Please vote for her.
Because of the single transferable vote system we would also urge you to use your second preference to vote for Kevin Courtney.
