School Reps' Handbook > The role of the School Rep
Dealing with members' problems and grievances
This is sometimes one of the most difficult areas for Reps to deal with but it is also one that is most valued by members. The involvement of the Rep can help to prevent situations escalating while ensuring that the member's interests are protected. The following guidelines should be helpful but if you are at all uncertain or uncomfortable about taking on this role please contact the Office.
- Discuss the matter with the member. Ask her/him to put the problem or grievance in writing.
- Do you need advice from an Association Officer or Regional Office?
- If appropriate, consult with the Headteacher/Principal, but only with the member's agreement.
- Report back to the member and decide how to proceed.
- You can attend to support the member if s/he wishes.
- If not resolved, contact an Association Officer for further advice.
Remember to keep a record of all discussions and meetings, however informal they may be.
