Preparing for a union meeting
Seven steps to successful meetings
- Get the timing right
Choose a time when as many members as possible will be able to attend. It may be possible to negotiate with your Headteacher/Principal to include these meetings within directed time. Make sure you have enough time. - Book room
Meet at the same time and in the same place. Members need know that the NUT meet and are active. - Advertise
Advertise the meetings. is also useful to publish an agenda in advance. This reminds members of the meeting and encourages them to attend. - Be prepared
Have copies of any documents to be discussed available for all members. Remember you can claim the cost of photocopying from the Association. - Chair and minutes
Arrange for someone to chair the meeting and someone to take minutes. - FAQs
Be aware of issues that might be raised. Have copies of local agreements, Association documents, information from Hamilton House available to answer questions. Refer any other problems to the local office. - Meet regularly
Have regular meetings, if possible. Always meet at the same time and in the same place. Members need know that the NUT meet and are active.
Remember: a local association officer will be happy to attend a meeting if you think it would be helpful.
