Induction
What are my entitlements as a newly-qualified teacher?
The following checklist should help you ensure that all newly qualified teachers (including those working as supply teachers for a period of a term or more) in your school are receiving their entitlements under the arrangements for induction.
- Has every newly qualified teacher been assigned an induction tutor, as required by DfEE Circular 582/2001, 'The Induction Period for Newly Qualified Teachers'?
- Has the Headteacher/Principal ensured that all teachers serving induction "do not teach for more than 90 per cent of the time a teacher at the school who does not receive points of responsibility would be expected to teach, in accordance with the 'School Teachers' Pay and Conditions Document'?
- Do all newly qualified teachers and their induction tutors have easy access to a copy of DfEE Circular 582/2001?
- Has each newly qualified teacher seen his or her job description? Is their teaching role within the age range and subject(s) for which they have been trained (as required by DfEE Circular 582/2001)?
- The 'appropriate body', usually the LEA, is required to appoint a named individual with whom newly qualified teachers can raise issues about induction. Are all newly qualified teachers aware of that person?
- Are all inductees receiving their salary on time and in accordance with their instructions?
- Are all newly qualified teachers on permanent contracts?
If the answer to any of the above questions is 'no' you should seek to rectify the matter through discussion with the Headteacher/Principal. Where matters cannot be promptly or satisfactorily resolved, advice should be sought from your LTA contact officer or Regional Office.
